The ‘Know Your CO’ roadshow is coming to Knowsley encouraging people to get their carbon monoxide (CO) levels tested and raise awareness of the dangers of smoking.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless and poisonous gas that is a small part of the air we breathe. Smoking increases the CO content of your blood, decreasing its ability to carry oxygen and this can lead to heart disease.
Carbon Monoxide can be found in cigarette and second hand tobacco smoke, car exhaust fumes and faulty gas appliances.
The symptoms of mild carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to those of flu; headaches, tiredness and nausea. The symptoms can gradually get worse with prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide, which can lead to a delay in diagnosis.
The Knowsley Stop Smoking Service roadshow will visit Huyton town centre on Saturday 14 October, Kirkby town centre on Saturday 21 October, Huyton ASDA on Sunday 22 October, Prescot town centre, Eccleston Street on Saturday 28 October and Stockbridge Village, Parrys Supermarket on Saturday 4 November.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Wellbeing and Customer Services said:
“Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and poisonous gas so you don’t know you are breathing it in.
I’d encourage as many people as possible to get tested whilst the roadshow is travelling around the borough.”
James O’Neill, who leads the Knowsley Stop Smoking Service, said:
“We want to screen as many people as possible for carbon monoxide so even if you don’t smoke, you’ll be aware of the dangers and can talk about it to friends and family who may be smokers.
“It’s really easy to measure your CO; you just need to blow into a simple monitor. Even passive or second hand smoke can increase your risk of developing smoking-related diseases and if your levels are raised because someone in your household smokes, this might help you to raise the issue with them.
“The good news is that if you stop smoking, your CO level will return to normal within one or two days.”
