The outdoor performance and public open space at Market Place in Prescot will soon be transformed in a £500,000 scheme being delivered through the Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative.
The council is looking for a tenant for the new café /multi use building and would like to hear from social enterprises, community investment companies and charities as well as commercial businesses with a community focus.
The tenant’s challenge will be to bring the new building and the outdoor performance and open space to life whilst offering a high quality food and drink provision within the new café or coffee shop.
In exchange for a peppercorn rent, the tenant will be required to host regular community events, activities and performances and be a part of the town’s big events like the Prescot Festival, Shakespeare performances and the Elizabethan Fayre. This way the new building and public open space will be able to meet their potential and be busy across the seasons and at different times of the day and week.
The design of the new look Market Place was selected though a RIBA design competition earlier this year and the planning application for the development is currently being considered by Knowsley Council.
Cllr Graham Morgan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for regeneration and Economic Development said:
“The transformation of Market Place is the biggest single project of our £4m Townscape Heritage Initiative and an important part of our vision for Prescot’s renaissance.
“This space will integrate with the proposed Shakespeare North Playhouse, town centre connectivity improvements and other developments to deliver a building and space that will truly enhance the character and appearance of Prescot’s conservation area.”
